Persoonlijk? De beste jaargang sinds tijden!

Protesters' bomb damages La Baume
A shadowy group of Languedoc winegrowers has claimed responsibility for a bomb attack on the warehouses of Domaine de La Baume in southern France. The group, which calls itself the CRAV (Comité regional d'action viticole) attacked the warehouse on the night of the 7th of March, and caused some damage to the door and roof of the barrel cellar. The perpetrators are said to have left a message, written on the wall of the cellar, saying "CRAV - final warning".
La Baume is owned by Les Grands Chais de France, France's largest exporter of wine, which bought the winery from the Australian company BRL Hardy in 2003. It is thought that the attack was aimed at the perceived power of global wine companies, compared with the small traditional growers.
Solange Dreumière, winemaker at the Domaine, said: "This was carried out by a few isolated individuals, who have picked the wrong target. We buy grapes from all over the region, and are trying to promote the notion of quality in the wines of Languedoc-Roussillon."
Police also found several unexploded sticks of dynamite at another neighbouring winery, Domaines de Virginie, part of the Castel Group, owners of Oddbins and Nicolas.
The blast came the night before a large demonstration by local winegrowers who marched through the streets of Montpellier, the main centre of Languedoc's wine-growing area. Up to ten thousand protestors took to the streets, to voice their anger at the diminishing market for their wines, and at the French government's financial package aimed at easing the crisis.
The demonstration started peacefully, but ended with some demonstrators setting fire to dustbins, and throwing bricks at riot police, who responded with tear gas.
The protestors believe that the Agriculture Minister's recently-announced aid package of €70 million is not enough to combat the problems associated with over-production, reduced exports and falling domestic sales for French wine.
